bedtime routine

Bedtime for our firstborn son has recently become a struggle, since the birth of baby no. 2. what used to be a fun, creative outlet for storytelling, now has me reaching for water to quench my thirst, story after story, night after night, hour after hour. during intermissions, i've fended requests for graham crackers, more water, more milk, and even to play with his friends, who are hopefully sleeping at their respective houses. want the light on? no light. want goldilocks (his teddy bear)? no goldilocks. want the blanket to be cozy? NO BLANKET!!! want another nemo story? ehh....ok here goes.. yeah i probably shouldn't give him that many options, either, but when its 10pm and he's STILL AWAKE and your ice cream is now chocolate truffle MILK, you'll do anything to oblige to sleepyland..

my husband has concluded that our toddler is trying to sabotage our sleeping arrangement and is looking for an invitation into our bed. i'm convinced that i'm never going to get any more sleep than my son! so we set some new rules. absolutely no sleeping in his bed, nor can he sleep in ours. we can allow him in our room, so long as he bring along his sleeping acoutrements himself. *thankfully, he travels light* we have long since used candles, massage, a sound soother which is now just background noise, and warm milk to cajole him into lalaland.

we find ourselves falling asleep before him, using random, silly story plots, boring him with the painful details of our day. hmm....i haven't tried reading him my old accounting texts yet...

something's gotta give, we all need some quality sleep around here...
